What is the Mathematics program like?

The Mathematics program at King University offers a Bachelor of Science degree with or without teaching certification.  You can also minor in Math. The upper level classes have a low teacher-student ratio that ensures personal mentoring.  As a math major you'll have the opportunity to present independent research in poster sessions or ten minute talks at regional and national mathematics conferences.

King University has a site license for Mathematica, the premier mathematical software. As a Math major, you will become adept at generating graphics and performing any number of convoluted operations. Each year King University fields a team of four students to compete in Math Jeopardy at the Mathematical Association of America regional conference. In 2011 our students placed 2nd out of 16 teams, besting such schools as Davidson and Rhodes!

What can you do with a Mathematics degree?

Although you should not choose a discipline solely on its associated potential earning power in the marketplace, having that feature is a nice bonus. Mathematics is often listed as one of ten majors commanding the highest salaries. The career paths of our Mathematics majors have included:

  • Teaching in high school or college
  • Assistantships or fellowships in graduate programs
  • Actuarial work---predicting capital-risk likelihoods
  • Quality control in manufacturing
  • Computer programming
  • Engineering: electrical, mechanical, and environmental
  • Intelligence work for the government
  • Research development team members in various corporations
  • Medical practice (Math makes a great major too for students who want to pursue medical school.)
  • Political Science (Math is an important tool for understanding how data is used to make persuasive arguments.)

What are Math majors doing now?

Recent Mathematics majors pursuing graduate school have been awarded assistantships and fellowships---which means that the students get paid to take and teach classes or do research. King grads are studying at:

  • Rutgers
  • Vanderbilt
  • Emory
  • Virginia Tech
  • University of Tennessee
